New Year activities for kids: 25 ideas for New Year’s Eve and 1 January

Festivals · 4 minute read · Ages 3 to 10 · Updated

Little children rarely stay awake till midnight — and they don’t need to. The best New Year’s Eve for a child is an evening of crafts, silly games and a countdown at a time that suits them.

Here are 25 ideas for the last night of the year and the first day of 2027, from a 3-year-old’s party to resolutions a 10-year-old will actually keep.

1. New Year’s Eve at home

  1. Noon or 8 pm countdown. Count down to 8 pm (or to midnight in another country’s time zone) so little ones can celebrate before bed.
  2. Balloon countdown. Put a small note in each of 6 balloons (“dance for 1 minute”, “eat a sweet”) and pop one every hour.
  3. Memory jar of the year. Everyone writes or draws their best moment of 2026 and reads them out.
  4. “Year in review” photo walk on the phone or laptop — then switch screens off for the rest of the evening.
  5. Family talent show with homemade tickets.
  6. Pyjama picnic dinner on a sheet in the living room.

2. Easy New Year crafts

  1. Paper party hats from a semicircle of chart paper, stapled into a cone.
  2. Shaker noisemakers: two paper cups taped mouth-to-mouth with a spoon of dal inside.
  3. Paper-plate clock showing 12:00, with movable hands — a quick telling-the-time lesson too.
  4. “2027” poster with the numbers in bubble letters, filled with stickers and glitter.
  5. Confetti from a hole punch and old magazines (easy to sweep up afterwards!).

3. Party games

  1. Freeze dance — dance till the music stops.
  2. Guess the year: show old family photos and guess the year.
  3. Balloon keep-up: don’t let the balloon touch the floor.
  4. New Year bingo with pictures: fireworks, cake, clock, hat, stars.
  5. Prediction cards: “This year I will learn…”, “My height will be…” — open them next New Year.

4. Resolutions kids can keep

Children keep resolutions that are small, specific and fun. “Be good” is too vague; “read one story every night” works.

AgeExample resolutions
3–5Put my toys back in the box · brush teeth without being told · say thank you
6–8Read 10 minutes every night · learn one table a month · drink water instead of cold drinks
9–11Write in a diary · learn to cycle or swim · one hour less screen time on weekends

Write each resolution on a star, stick it on the wall, and add a tick every week it is kept. See also our guide to good habits for kids.

5. Ideas for 1 January

  1. Make a time capsule: a drawing, a handprint, a favourite toy photo and a letter. Open it on 1 January 2032.
  2. Measure and mark height on a door frame.
  3. Start a “1 line a day” diary.
  4. Go for a sunrise walk or visit a park.
  5. Cook a special first breakfast together.
  6. Make a 2027 calendar and mark birthdays and festivals.
  7. Plan a family bucket list of 12 things, one per month.
  8. Write thank-you notes to a teacher, grandparent or friend.
  9. Start a reading challenge: 25 books in 2027.
