Rhyming words for kids: 100+ words by word family, with games

Reading · 4 minute read · LKG to Class 2 · Updated

Cat, hat, bat, mat. Rhyming words are words that end with the same sound. Spotting them is one of the earliest signs that a child is ready to read, because it means they can hear the parts inside a word.

Below is a list of 100+ rhyming words grouped into word families, from the easiest (LKG) to harder ones (Class 2), plus games that turn rhyme practice into play.

1. Why rhyming matters

To rhyme, a child has to split a word into its first sound (/c/) and the rest (/at/). That skill, called phonological awareness, is the base of phonics. Children who rhyme easily usually find blending and spelling easier too. Once they know cat, a whole family — bat, fat, hat, mat, pat, rat, sat — becomes readable.

2. Easy word families (LKG–UKG)

5. 8 rhyming games

  1. Rhyme or not? Say two words; thumbs up if they rhyme (cat–hat 👍, cat–dog 👎).
  2. Odd one out: pig, wig, sun, fig.
  3. Finish my rhyme: “I saw a cat sitting on a…” (mat / hat).
  4. Rhyme hunt: find something at home that rhymes with log, bed, fan.
  5. Silly names: Ravi-Bavi-Tavi! Children love rhyming their own name.
  6. Word family houses: draw a house for -at and fill each window with a word.
  7. Rhyme ball: throw a ball and say a rhyming word each catch until someone gets stuck.
  8. Nursery rhymes with a gap: sing “Twinkle twinkle little star, how I wonder what you…” and pause.
