Two letter Hindi words (दो अक्षर वाले शब्द) and three letter words without matra
Once your child knows the Hindi varnamala, the next step is joining letters into words. The easiest words have no matra at all — two or three consonants side by side, each with its built-in “a” sound: घ + र = घर.
Below are lists of do akshar and teen akshar words, with meanings, and a simple order to teach them.

1. How Hindi words without matra work
Every Hindi consonant already carries a short “a” sound: क is “ka”, म is “ma”. In everyday speech the “a” of the last letter is usually dropped, so घर is said “ghar”, not “ghara”. Tell children: read the letters together, and the last one stays short.
2. Two letter words (दो अक्षर वाले शब्द)
| Word | Say | Meaning | Word | Say | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| घर | ghar | house | जल | jal | water |
| फल | phal | fruit | नल | nal | tap |
| बस | bas | bus / enough | कल | kal | tomorrow / yesterday |
| हल | hal | plough | वन | van | forest |
| मन | man | mind | तन | tan | body |
| रथ | rath | chariot | छत | chhat | roof |

3. Three letter words (तीन अक्षर वाले शब्द)
| Word | Say | Meaning | Word | Say | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| कमल | kamal | lotus | कलम | kalam | pen |
| नमक | namak | salt | महल | mahal | palace |
| मटर | matar | peas | बतख | batakh | duck |
| शहर | shahar | city | सरल | saral | easy |
| गरम | garam | hot | नरम | naram | soft |
| चमक | chamak | shine | सड़क | sadak | road |
| बरतन | bartan | utensils (4 letters) | अजगर | ajgar | python (4 letters) |
| कसरत | kasrat | exercise (4 letters) | खटमल | khatmal | bed bug (4 letters) |
The last four have four letters — a good challenge once three-letter words feel easy.

Every word in these sentences is made only of letters from the varnamala, with no matra — so a child can read them on day one.
5. How to teach, step by step
- Revise the letters in the word first: say क, म, ल.
- Blend slowly: ka…ma…l → kamal. Run a finger under the letters.
- Picture match: show a lotus picture and the word together.
- Five words a day, read and written, is enough. Revise yesterday’s five first.
- Move to matras once two- and three-letter words are read without help — start with the ा matra (see our barahkhadi chart).
Questions parents ask
What are two letter words in Hindi?
Words made of two consonants without any matra, such as घर (ghar), जल (jal), फल (phal), नल (nal) and बस (bas).
What are three letter words without matra?
Words like कमल (kamal), कलम (kalam), नमक (namak), महल (mahal), मटर (matar) and बतख (batakh).
At what age should a child read Hindi words?
Usually in UKG or Class 1 (ages 5–6), once the child recognises most letters of the varnamala.
